The Spark units were pretty disappointing, apart from their voices. As for the Alien Hunters DLC, the alien rulers are annoying, and I don't really like the new gear. Aesthetically, it stands out from all the other gear (even the Anarchy's Children DLC) and functionally, the new gear feels either useless or cheap. However, where XCOM 2 initially impressed me by making the equipment upgrades it doles out unpredictable, this expansion is a move that will make every.

You can start it from the beginning of a new game even though the boss is impossible to beat. At the beginning of a new game you can uncheck a box that removes the storyline from that game.sadly the boss now shows up anyway. I was still a 4 man squad with 2 sergeants, a corporal and a squaddie and the boss shows in a mandatory side mission.its not possible that early in the game.
Submitted on 2019-10-14 Review title of dpcharleFun to be hadThis dlc with the new weapons and the story line is a whole lot of fun sure. But heres the thing the bosses are way to hard and they come way to early. But the reason why I'm giving this a 4 star rating is because after when you kill those bosses you get some awesome armor from them and having the viper king armor early in the game will surely give you the edge you need.
Also theirs a lot of new customization for your troops which look amazing. But even with all that cool stuff i won't give this a 5 star because of how hard the bosses are.
Are they a good addtion to the game? Are they too strong, just strong enough to handle the rulers or even too weak? How do they influence your loadouts?Personally, the longer I play with them the less I like them.Only two items are well designed imo: the bolt caster and frost bomb. They are sidegrades with special applications. The bolt caster deals tons of damage and has a high stun chance but only has one shot. The frost grenade has some of the best utility of all grenades but a small explosion range. All the other items are straight up improved versions of existing gear. Axes: one more damage, free axe throw.Pistol: gives aim and has guarenteed damage + potential stealth.unique armors: depending on the type, they have more HP, more dodge, more mobility or a combination of those compared to normal armors. Plus, the free actions are very powerful.
Serpent Armor is the only on with a downside compared to the Wraith Suit because it doesn't give the wraith ability. As you can see, most weapons and armors added by the DLC are objectively stronger than the normal ones. There's no reason to ever use heavy armor if you have the berserker armor. There's no reason to use swords if you have the axes. The free actions are kinda neccessary against the rulers but too strong against normal enemies. A shotgunner with berserker armor is unstoppable.Another issue arises if you use Grimy's Loot mod. Got a cool sword from a lootbox? Sucks for you, the axes are still better.
I will probably not use any of the new items in my next playthrough. What's your opinion?. Overall I love the Rulers, although they're extremely frustrating to encounter on timed missions. They add a great amount of difficulty to the game, but it's in an interestingly diverse way with the Ruler Reactions rather than normal turns. Luckily I've never found them on Retaliation sites. The weapons are pretty cool, I wish the Shadowkeeper had a damage bonus or some other effect rather than Shadowfall, because a sniper really can't, or rather doesn't, utilise the extra stealth. The axe is a straight upgrade from the sword, and one which in my opinion is nice, but the melee itself still is very risky and not worth said risk. Bolt caster's nice, the reloads put it in an. Black and white american flag with blue stripe.
Odd position. It does great damage and the no dodge is nice, but again it's a huge pain to bring on timed missions. The armours are pretty good too. Icarus armour is amazing on a gunslinger, can get you into a safe flanking position for a completely destructive faceoff.
In all honesty the serpent suit feels slightly weaker than the others, I wish its 'stage 2' upgrade made it a bit stronger. RAGE suit is great, I would have preferred a melee upgrade rather than melee ability, but this way it's much more varied with the classes you can use it on.
I sorta wish Icarus Armour gave you the old Archangel flight, but like I said before it's got a lot of cool applications.Frost grenade is fucking amazing on Grenadiers. No, I get it. It's just really not my taste. Enemy Within gave us pretty substantial game play changes. I loved the Operative missions.I just feel as if all the DLC we've gotten is. I don't know how to put this. Not thematic maybe?
Like I play XCOM, for a military power fantasy. I want to feel as if I'm in charge of an elite squad facing untold alien horrors and sometimes they shoot each other in the face when they panic. The first contact scene in the movie Aliens is how it feels when a squad goes to shit. I love that. What I don't want is this weird World of Warcraft stuff being injected into my military sim.
I was okay with the swords addition. I thought it was a little weird, but the swords are mostly oversized machetes and eventually they feel like futuristic close combat weapons.
The axes are what I would gear my Tauren with.It feels as bizarre to me as if I dropped a laser rifle into Oblivion. Sure, you can do it, I just think it really breaks the theme you've taken time crafting. The only thing I truly dislike about AH is the art for the armor. I feel like the weapons do a lot to smooth out the early game naturally, and the risk/reward that goes in to the rulers feels good. While upgrading the ruler weapons separately feels weird at first, it makes sense in context of the rulers.A lot of people don't like the ruler mechanics, but I think the whole package, as a package, really works. You get some stuff that's pretty powerful early game, but some of that stuff quickly falls by the wayside unless you do a somewhat challenging narrative mission, and by doing so open the pandora's box that is the rulers. The separate upgrade thing feels right with these IMO. The way they're designed, they all have edge uses without the upgrades.Similarly, the reward of the ruler armor is absolutely an upgrade to standard equipment, but it comes at the cost of having to have suffered through rulers in the campaign, which more often than not causes some strategic hardships that I feel warrant a bit of a boost.Basically, its the thing people that really hate about the rulers that I feel balances the gear.
They're designed to make you fail, and case full or partial squad wipes at a basic level. I get why people hate that, but I also feel that the payoff of the armor is an appropriate reward for the soldiers or missions you may very realistically lose as a result of the rulers. Its not everyone's cup of tea, but as a package I think it does what it set out to do really well. The problem is that what it sets out to do is enforce the possibility of a nigh-unadvoidable, possibly lethal disruption to normal play, and compensate you for weathering that storm with overpowered gear for doing so.That feels balanced to me, but it's balanced based on a 'failure is not always avoidable' style of design that many XCOM players don't consider a tenant of the core game play. It's polarizing content. As for the 'well it makes x mod less useful' keep in mind that you shouldn't really hold firaxis accountable for that just like you wouldn't hold a modder accountable for that. Firaxis doesn't design DLC to balance around mods.
They balance it around the core game because they have no control over the mods. If modders want to make their mods play nicer balance wise with AH, that's on them, not firaxis. That's not an issue with the DLC. That's an issue with choosing to use mods that mess with its balancing levers. The items make me angry.Let me explain why.
XCOM 2 is supposed to be a hard game. Yet there is this damn thing called the freeze grenade, which just works and means you always have to bring back your grenadier every mission once you understand how powerful the freeze grenade is as a weapon. It's the ultimate alpha strike and nothing seems to be immune to it.You always need a grenadier and one slot always needs to have the freeze grenade. The game also feels like the game is adapting to the idea that a freeze grenade exists. It's like the early mimic beacon, but even more powerful. A single neigh essential item is a problem where life can be brutal and short.I get that it's a unique item.
That's the problem. If it was a late game item, then i wouldn't have an issue with it at all. Then we get onto the ShadowKeeper PistolI can't even describe how pissed off a weapon that hits 100% of the time and grants concealment makes me.
This isn't XCOM. Weapons don't make you invisible and they also don't hit 100% unless you are at point blank.

How the hell does that work? No.The rest of the items I'm actually ok with. The armors get a little silly, but I'm ok with them.
I just wish Jake would keep his weapons in the realm of reality and balance.A laser bow thing. SureArmor made out of the skin of a dangerous alien. W/e the weebs will love it.The axe. It's annoying, but it's not a god weapon.
It just helps you knock out that first pod. It's not great, but it doesn't break the game. I could leave it behind. The problem with the items are that they become essential to high level play, the game adapts to them being there, and then we end up with less creative options because you MUST take these items. I really liked it except for the goofy hats on the armors. Body wise the Icarus looks great. Serpent is OK. RAGE is weird and creepy but i guess that's appropriate and canon.I don't feel like the rulers burdened me with having to bring the special weapons.
Bolt caster never got a stun for me. Frost nade was nigh useless on archon but handy for the rest. Shadow keeper was great on my gunslinger but never used against the rulers. Axe was useful but such a strong upgrade anyway it wasn't a burden. My opinion is based on one veteran Ironman play through and may change on my next one which will be commander ironman.
